The Visitor: Lost Village (after Jong Nam), Jeju Island, Korea

The Visitor: Lost Village is a series of works I created after visiting the Lost Villages on Jeju Island in South Korea. These villages were named to commemorate the small villages that were destroyed during the Jeju 4.3 (1947-1954). As of 2019, 122 villages are recorded as Lost Villages. Some have been rebuilt, while others remain unoccupied and untouched.
As I walked through the lost villages, surrounded by remnants of history, I wanted to revive the everydayness of the villages, rather than mourn the lost lives. In The Visitor: Lost Village (after Jong Nam), I stroll carefully through the villages as if visiting neighbours.
