Tracing Memory
2016 & 2019
Drawing on mylar paper, Drawing (laser cut) on metal
I’m using personal photographs that may seem ordinary but hold significant meanings for me. I trace the outlines of the images, purposely removing identifying features of the people, such as their faces, ethnicity, and gender, leaving only the background visible. I am intrigued to see if the site/location/surroundings can offer enough information for others to generate their own stories based on their memories.
Tracing by hand is a slow, methodical, and intimate experience. In contrast, drawings on a piece of metal are done using a fast and mechanical laser-cut technique, further removing details from the hand-traced drawings.
